Detailed description is The Milltown Fire Department was incorporated on Feb.
22, 1911 History of The Milltown Fire Department.
In 1910, Mayor Conrad Richter called together the citizens of Milltown to organize a Volunteer Fire Department, to cut down on the needless loss of life and property.
Prior to this, the New Brunswick Fire Department answered alarms in Milltown with their horse drawn apparatus.
This group moved quickly and on February 22, 1911, the Milltown Fire Department was organized with a charter membership of 83 men.
Henry Kuhlthau was elected the first Foreman of the Department.
(Until the title of Fire Chief was used in 1922, this was the highest ranking officer).
A committee composed of Conrad Richter, Dr.
N.N.
Forney and J.M.
Brindle proposed the name “Eureka Fire Company No.
1”.
Eureka is defined as a Greek word used to express triumph upon discovering or finding something..
The new Department received its’ first piece of fire fighting equipment on August 5, 1911, during a picnic at Milltown Park.
The apparatus was a 2 cylinder fire engine built by Boyd Brothers in Philadelphia.
It carried two 40 gallon chemical tanks, hose and ladders.
This was reported as being the first motorized fire apparatus in Middlesex County.
During the same month the members purchased caps from their own funds as part of their uniform..
The new equipment was on hand only one month before it answered its first alarm.
A haystack at Mrs.
Conrad Kuhlthau’s farm was burning.
Her son Henry responded on the new fire engine and extinguished the fire..
In 1912, the department became a member of the New Jersey State Relief Association and also purchased full dress uniforms..
On October 1, 1913, The Department marched in its’ first parade as guests of Washington Engine Co.

Milltown had the only motorized fire equipment in the parade, along with 60 men marching, they received an award for best of show..
Also in 1913, The Michelin Tire Company agreed to blow its’ factory whistle for fire calls.
One long blast for a fire north of the Lawrence Brook and two long blasts for a fire on the south side of the brook..
In 1914, the Department was called to a fire at the Parson’s Snuff Mill in North Brunswick.
Foreman Elwood Boyce took a break and drank some water from a nearby stream.
He contracted Typhoid fever and passed away a few days later.
Fortunately this has been Milltown’s only Line of Duty death..
In 1916, the Borough Council purchased a Ford Model T Chassis that the department converted to a hose car.
This was kept in H.R.B.
Meyers garage.
After being used by the Fire Department for about 7 years, it was turned over to the Borough’s Utility Department..
On April 24 1919, the borough Council presented each Fireman that had served seven years, a certificate from the New Jersey State Exempt Fireman’s Association..
In 1920, a seven district fire alarm was put into effect.
The approximate location could be determined by different combinations of long and short blasts on the Michelin whistle.
As raid progress continued in the development of fire apparatus, Milltown saw the need to provide a more modern piece for the Department.
In May of 1921, the town purchased an American LaFrance Triple Combination pumper/chemical/hose truck for $12,500.
This new engine’s first alarm was in October of that year.
A Public Service trolley car was ablaze on South Main Street..
In 1922, the borough’s insurance carrier recommended that two fire companies be formed and another firehouse on the north side of town.
The Eureka Fire Company met and after much discussion it was decided to disband.
At the same meeting, Eureka Engine Company No 1 and Eureka Hose Company No.
1 were formed, with 25 men serving each company.
With the organization of the two Fire Companies, came the need for a Fire Board to oversee them.
The First Fire Board elected was Chief John Bauries, 1st Asst.
Chief Henry Christ and 2nd Asst.
Chief John Glock..
In 1923, the town purchased a Graham Brothers Dodge truck chassis.
Equipment and parts were taken from the 1911 Boyd Bros.
truck and the 1916 Model T and put on the Dodge chassis.
This new truck was kept in Becker’s garage on Richter Avenue until a new firehouse could be constructed on Cottage Avenue.
This was completed in 1925 at a cost of $16,000..
The Michelin Tire Co.
closed its’ doors and moved back to France in 1930.
This left the Department without an alarm system.
The Russell Playing Card co.
agreed to blow their whistle in a similar manner for the Fire Department.

left town in 1946).
At the time of the Department’s 25th anniversary, a group of members interested in starting a volunteer rescue squad formed a committee.
On December 7, 1937 the Milltown Rescue Squad was organized with a membership consisting of many Firemen.
The Milltown Rescue Squad is a separate organization, but has always answered all fire calls and have been available to assist in any way needed.
Their continued cooperation has always been appreciated by the Fire Department..
In 1939, the Department received its’ first ladder truck, a Mack quad with a 750 gpm pump.
This was assigned to Hose Co.
on Cottage Ave.
At the end of WWII, the Borough purchased a 1945 Chevrolet Army Surplus pumper that previously served Belle Meade Army Depot.
Later that year, both these trucks fought a 4 hour blaze that destroyed the bowling ally at the Michelin Community House.

In 1940, a group of 16 Firemen’s wives met to form The Milltown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
The Ladies Auxiliary raises money through a variety of fund raising events and has always been there to support the Milltown Fire Department..
With the 1921 American LaFrance going on its’ 26th year of service, it was time to move forward with more modern equipment.
Engine Co, received on January 1, 1948, a new American LaFrance pumper.
This was one of the first “enclosed cab forward” trucks in the industry, a design that would become a fire service standard that is still in use today..
In 1948, long time resident Russell Lins was appointed Borough Dispatcher.
All the radio equipment and siren controls were installed in his home on Elm Place and he alone provided the town with 24 hour dispatching service..
The most disastrous fire to this point was the fire at Katz Linoleum Warehouse on Washington Ave.
Damages were estimated at $350,000, an extraordinary amount of money in 1955.
The fire was fought for 2 days..
In 1956, the membership dedicated a new monument on South Main Street in honor its’ fallen members..
At the May 1959 meeting of Engine Co., it was reported that the 1921 American LaFrance once owned by Milltown could be reacquired at no cost.
There was much interest and the old truck was brought back home.
A second 1921 LaFrance formally from Freehold, was purchased from a junkyard and the membership restored the LaFrance using parts from both trucks.
An addition was put on the barn behind Engine Co to store the newly acquired parade piece.
This fire engine is still a popular attraction at parades and antique car shows.

A 1963 Mack 1000gpm Pumper was purchased for Hose Co.
to replace the Chevrolet.
The purchase price was $25,000.
In 1966 the Borough saw the need to obtain a fourth piece of fire apparatus.
A 1957 Chevrolet Utility truck was purchased from Bell Telephone Co.
The membership converted this to a Salvage Unit.
It carried a generator, portable lights, a deck gun, and was capable of carrying additional manpower.
The Barn behind Engine Co.
was used to house this vehicle..
In 1968, with the passing of Russell Lins, the Borough dispatcher, The Council established a 24 hour emergency dispatch service at the Municipal Building.
A new Seagrave 100’ Aerial Ladder truck with a 1000gpm pump was ordered this year..
In May of 1971, The Milltown Fire Department celebrated its’ 60th anniversary with a huge parade and town wide celebration.
95 units and over 4,000 people marched in the 3 hour parade followed by a Beer and Hot Dog Party at Borough Park..
In May of 1973, the Milltown Fire Department was dispatched to the New Jersey Turnpike to provide lighting for a manhunt involving the murder of NJ State Trooper Werner Foerster.
The fugitive, Clark Squire was found the next day near harts Lane.
Black liberation Army member Joanne Chesimard was charged in the killing.
Later that month, Engine Company received delivery of a Great Eastern 1000gpm Pumper..
February 1975, a large fire gutted the Chicopee Manufacturing Warehouse on Ford Avenue.
(Former home to Michelin Tire Co.) Not 24 hours after the fire was extinguished, a second blaze erupted, larger than the first.
Firemen spent a total of 5 days at the site, that was determined arson.
A new Ford Salvage Unit with a ranger box body was ordered for Engine Company.
In addition to a generator, portable lights and deck gun, this unit will have the capabilities of filling Scott Air bottles.
In order to house this unit, an addition was added to the existing South Main Street firehouse..
In 1978, The Milltown Fire prevention Bureau was organized.
The first inspectors were Edward Harto, Edward Klesitz and George Guise..
In Jan.
1981, Edward Harto proposed the idea of creating a Fire Museum in the Barn behind Engine Co.
This idea was enthusiastically embraced and passed.
Work began in Feb.
of 1981 and slowly continued until it was complete in 1984.
Since then, hundreds of guests from dozens of countries have visited The Eureka Fire Museum..
A new Mack Pumper was purchased in 1984 and a Seagrave 100 foot Aerial Ladder in 1989, both for Hose Company..
The Milltown Fire Department celebrated its’ 75th Anniversary with an Antique Fire Truck Muster.
About 20 apparatus from around the State partook in the event..
Engine Company took delivery of 2 new American LaFrance pumpers, one in 1992 and another 1998..
