Detailed description is Miley is a rescue in Missouri working to support the healing of trauma survivors through animal-assisted advocacy. Did you know the presence of a trained advocacy dog.... ...can make a difference in the life of a child or adult who is the survivor of a violent crime?. ...can reduce trauma symptoms like flashbacks and anxiety?. ...can provide a sense of comfort and calm?. ...can complete the services offered by prosecutors, therapists, advocacy centers and law enforcement to empower survivors of violent crimes?. . Meet Miley.. . In September 2014, Miley was just another skinny runaway at Jefferson County Animal Control near St. Louis, Missouri. She was admitted for her fourth adult stray hold. That day an angel intervened and saved her life. Her owners were convinced by shelter staff to surrender her, and Serendipity German Shepherd Dog Rescue of Jefferson City MO took her on. Miley was moved from the shelter to a local boarding facility until a foster could be found. She was visibly underweight, with some skin sores, but that was only the beginning of her health challenges.. At the vet it was learned that Miley was unspayed and - devastatingly - heartworm positive. Due to her low weight (57 pounds) after she was placed for foster, the six month protocol for treatment had to be followed. That meant near full time crating, walking on a leash at all times, and no play to avoid fatal lung embolisms - until the spring. Miley was also found to have whipworms, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth and several severe skeletal and muscular/ligament injuries which appeared to never have been treated, including a shattered back knee.. The whirlwind of treatments, surgeries and vet visits culminated in clear heartworm tests in 2015, finalization of adoption and preparation for ordinary doggie life. Along the way, Miley made it clear that she was anything but ordinary! Despite her mishandling by humans, she loves people and has an unusually sharp interest in human emotional states. Miley can sense an increase in anxiety, sadness or anger in a human from as far as 15 feet away. She generally responds with a visual contact, followed by physical approach to a sit, then a paw touch to the leg or arm. This is also helpful to alert others to escalated emotional states. If her presence is welcome, Miley will sit or lay down in proximity to the escalated person until the emotional state is resolved. She seeks and will respond to physical touch, talk and eye contact during this time. . Besides the obedience skills she needed to learn, Miley has an acute fear of other dogs. This may be due to some exposure to canine violence, as she has a torn ear and several scars on her muzzle. While it was necessary to get her quickly into the right training, Miley continued to face health challenges into 2016.. Two tumors were discovered, one deep in her shoulder and one in a mammary gland. The second was especially concerning since she was spayed so late in life and it indeed tested malignant. Both tumors were removed in May 2016 - and again, Miley's angel was watching for her! The pathology on both tumors turned out benign!. In August 2016 she was healed from surgery. After her primary assessment, it was determined by an experienced trainer that Miley would need several months of preparation to pass her AKC Canine Good Citizen test. She began training at that time and took her first test in December 2016. She passed all components pertaining to obedience and socializing with people. The one area which continues to need refining is, predictably, interactions with other dogs. She started to have some trouble with her toenails cracking and splitting, and was put on a month of rest until she was diagnosed with Symmetrical Lupoid Onychodystrophy, an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks the toenails. After another month of restricted exercise and treatment, she was back in action. She continues to socialize and work her commands weekly at local parks in Greene County, and has recently been accepted for intensive canine socialization training (trauma therapy!) with her trainer. Nothing keeps this fighter down!. .
