İlk, orta ve lise eğitimini Antalya’ da tamamladıktan sonra İngiltere’ de gazetecilik eğitimi aldı. Uzun yıllar boyunca Antalya’ da gazeteci olarak çalışan Menderes Türel, çeşitli basın ve yayın kuruluşları tarafından bir çok kez yılın gazetecisi olarak ödüllendirildi. 1987 yılında Basın Yayın ve Enformasyon Genel Müdürlüğü tarafından araştırma ve inceleme dalında Türkiye’nin en iyi gazetecisi seçildi. . . 1992 yılında, 28 yaşındayken Antalya Ticaret ve Sanayi Odası Oda Meclisi üyeliğine seçilen Türel, daha sonra 21 Kasım 1987 ve 25 Kasım 1999 tarihleri arasında ATSO Yönetim Kurulu Başkan vekilliği görevini yürüttü. 9 Kasım 2001 tarihinde yapılan oda seçimlerinin ardından 14 Kasım 2001 tarihinde üstlendiği Antalya Ticaret ve Sanayi Odası Yönetim Kurulu . . Başkanlığı görevini 22 Ocak 2004 tarihine kadar sürdürdü. Bu tarihte, Büyükşehir Belediye Başkan Adayı olmak için kendi arzusu ile Yönetim Kurulu Başkanlığı görevinden ayrıldı. 28 Mart 2004 günü yapılan genel yerel seçimlerde oyların yüzde 34.77’sini alarak Antalya Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı seçildi. 29 Mart 2009 tarihine kadar bu görevi yürüttü.
