Detailed description is I am a home baker with a focus on cupcakes...Flavors, wrappers, fondant toppers. I also bake cookies, and bake/decorate the occasional cake! Why MegMakes(cup)Cakes?. My name is Meagan and I am MegMakes(cup)Cakes. I am a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, a wife, a stepmother, a dancer, a baker, a friend, a follower of Christ. . . One of the most important roles in my life is that of wife and stepmother. I am blessed beyond measure with my family. Blended family life is *not* easy. Not. At. All. But, it has been worth it. Meeting my husband and stepchildren is really the reason that this business is even around, at all.. . I met my future husband and his kids back in 2003. I was the ripe old age of 18, headed off to college. I met this man, and fell in love with his 3 boys. Eventually, I fell in love with him, too <3 To make a long story short, three years later, on June 2, 2006, my love and I were married. It was definitely a bit of a ride those three years prior. Did I mention that blended family life is not easy? I was young and inexperienced, but eager to be the best stepmom I could be, which led to some mistakes on my part. Both my hubby and I are stubborn people, which led to more than one argument. Some kids take to you right away, and others don’t. I am proud to say that we got through it, though. . . Growing up, my momma was a great cook and baker (still is!). I, however, as a child/teenager, had far better things to do with my time then learn homemaking skills (I am still regretting not learning how to sew. My mother is a fantastic seamstress.). So, when I started becoming responsible for a home, it was a bit interesting. We ate a lot of Hamburger Helper in the early days. I had a cabinet full of it. Then, there were birthdays. Of course, I could go buy a cake from the grocery store, but our budget at the time didn’t really allow for that. So, I was going to make them. Even though I don’t think I had ever baked a cake in my life. I still remember the first birthday cake I made for one of the boys. It was a Funfetti cake mix, vanilla canned icing I died green, with a Hulk toy stuck on top. I had some disasters – trying to make two cake mixes in one 9x13 pan – and we did have one or two store bought cakes in the mix, but I kept at it (did I mention I was stubborn?). And, the cakes slowly started getting better. . . In November 2011 I “officially” started MegMakesCakes. I had been making some pretty nice looking cakes for some time at that point, and had even sold a few to some really awesome friends and family. I had decided that it was time to put some more effort into it. During this time period our family was also going through a pretty rough patch. Things hit a head in the early part of 2012, and involved possible court, and the stress of that situation, combined with the stress that is a result of my perfectionism when it comes to baking just got the better of me, and I decided it was time to take a break. I still made cakes for the boys, and even an occasional friend here or there, but I really put cakes on the backburner. . . Through the grace of God, we made it through that pretty dark and stressful time for our family, and came out on the other side. Court was avoided, and while we would have liked a slightly different outcome, we are in a better position than we were in previously. It’s been a little over the year since that time period, and I just felt it was time to get back in the game. Though that particular stress is now gone, there is still the stress that I impose upon myself. It just can be too much at times when it comes to cakes and knowing that someone is paying me based on what their cake looks like; my perfectionism just gets the better of me. But, I still *love* to bake and to create. I didn’t want to give that up completely! Cupcakes just seemed logical to me. They are the next big thing, and a little more low key for me ;) So, MegMakesCakes transformed into MegMakes(cup)Cakes. I am really hopeful for this new venture. . . What makes me a little different than most mom-based business you’ll find out there is the *why.* I read a lot of descriptions about how these business are all for helping their family and funding their kids activities. Now, don’t get me wrong. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. I think that is a fantastic mission, and I really believe in family. Families and our children truly are gifts. Without my family and my stepkids, this business wouldn’t be here. Who knows if I would have ever learned to bake, or discovered the talent and the passion? But, I’m doing this for me. One of my great passions in life is dance. I started lessons at the age of 7, and continued dancing straight through until I was 20. In high school I danced 5 or 6 days a week, several hours a day. While I attended college, it was even my minor. About 4 years ago, after a 4 year break, I started dancing again. And I fell in love, all over again. I want to dance more, get better, and as tuition goes up the more classes I take, I would love to be able to fund that. My husband is a wonderful provider for me and his boys, but as a currently one income family, finances can get tight. God gives us all gifts, and I truly believe that to not use them is hurtful to God. He has given me two gifts that I want to continue using for a long time. . . .
