In 1961, the not-for-profit Retirement Housing Foundation was created by two pastors from the United Church of Christ and a layman who saw the need for affordable and caring housing for seniors over 55. Based in Long Beach, California, the founders began searching for their first community and discovered a 65 acre parcel with 82 single story buildings nearly complete, empty and languishing in the high desert in West Lancaster. They bought the property, finished the apartments, added streets and landscaping and reopened n May of 1965 as Mayflower Gardens Retirement Community. Within five years, ground was broken on RHF's very first from-the-ground-up Convalescent Hospital. With over 173 senior and low income communities across the United States, Mayflower Gardens is proud to be RHF's very first senior community. With 501 Senior Living Apartments ranging from spacious studios to the 1356 sq. ft. two-bedroom, 2 den, 3 bath apartments at affordable rates, Mayflower gives today's adults over 55 a wonderful place to call Home.
