Sensei Matsumoto arrived in Australia in June 1966 as a pearling technician and marine biologist. He was employed by Pearls Pty Ltd of Perth and transferred to Thursday Island soon after.. . Sensei then formed the Shoku-kai Karate club by request of Island community in 1966.He resigned from the company to open one of the first professional Karate Academies in Cairns in 1975. The Matsumoto Karate Academy formed and commenced training in Cairns on 12th January 1976 and celebrated it's 40th anniversary in 2015.. . Townsville Branch has been operating at its current location since 1991..
