Im November 2013 eröffneten die beiden Stifter Hermann Maier und Gabriela Unbehaun-Maier in Kooperation mit der Stadt Singen ein Museum mit einzigartigem Konzept: Auf 1000 Quadratmetern war eine Ausstellungsfläche für kostbare Oldtimer im Dialog mit Kunst entstanden. Das schwingende, erdfarbene Gebäude selbst ist eine Invention des Architekten Daniel Binder, der über die Architektur eine Verbindung mit dem dahinter aufragenden Singener Vulkanberg Hohentwiel herstellt. Die Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung verglich den Bau bereits mit dem Guggenheim Museum Bilbaos und bescheinigte ihm Wahrzeichen-Potenzial. Mit der Eröffnungsausstellung „Wachgeküsst" war den beiden Stiftern, selbst leidenschaftliche Kunst- und Oldtimerliebhaber, schon ein großer Coup gelungen: Sie zeigten Automobile der berühmten elsässischen Sammlung Schlumpf zusammen mit Werken der Südwestdeutschen Kunststiftung, deren Heimat das MAC ist.
