LUMS Daily Student is not just a website where students put up articles or pictures; it’s an unofficial handbook which every student carries on him/her, an online portal through which every Luminite can connect to the university. The aim is to provide an outlet where Luminism can be practiced, propagated and enjoyed to its fullest, a means through which everyone can feel included. Born out of a need experienced by every Luminite to feel more in sync with the university that is home to all of us, LDS seeks to provide all of us with an always-accessible connection to home; from capturing timeless moments of joy to reporting on yesterday’s scavenger hunt, from providing videos of that standup comedy last night to providing candid comment pieces on the latest social transformation taking place, from reviewing the newest eatery in town to serving as an information center for whatever you need information on. . . That is why LDS, the journalistic society at LUMS, strives to capture Luminism in its entirety. The Campus News department report on each event that takes place within its premises, the Media Coverage department takes you there to the venue itself with those pictures and videos, and the society’s creative bloggers provide their invaluable insight on just about every issue that affects the university and its inhabitants, open to feedback from the entire student body. LDS is not just a forum for its members; it is also an avenue for every Luminite to make their voice heard, to learn more about their university, and to contribute towards this shared experience. It is why we say “Luminism Unlimited” J.. . In recent times, LDS has expanded its horizons in order to fulfill its role as the journalistic society of the country’s premier university, by launching Pakistan’s first ever journalism event, the Convention for Aspiring Reporters and Media Anchors, commonly referred to as the LUMS CARMA. The word CARMA is derived from the ancient word karma, which technically means repayment, whether in this life or the next for one’s actions in this life. The concept is most profound in the ancient faiths of Hinduism and Buddhism, but is found in some form or other in nearly every religion practiced today. It is also a concept that is linked heavily to the goal of modern-day journalism, because that is after the role of today’s media; to watch, to analyze, and to report in the most accurate and unbiased manner possible in order for the public to analyze the truth. That, in turn, implies projecting what is right and what is wrong. That, in turn, implies projecting what is right and what is wrong; thus making the media the watchdog of modern-day society with a role to ensure justice, or karma.. . The LUMS CARMA is therefore an attempt to hone the analytical and communication skills of its delegates and educate them about the ability to discern truth from rumors, the knowledge to question what needs to be questioned, and the vigor to present its audience a complete – and even more importantly – an unbiased, detailed account of the happenings. Above all, the CARMA seeks to provide an experience that inculcates in the delegates the ability to promote responsible journalistic practices and strive to glorify our vision to attain socio-economic awareness and freedom of expression; an objective that is in line with the ideologies of both LUMS and LDS.. .
