Detailed description is The first Lodge founded in the State of New Mexico (as opposed to the territory), Lovington Lodge #46 AF & AM meets on the First and Third Thursday of every month at 7PM.. . All Sojourning Masons are invited to attend. Lovington Lodge #46 AF & AM is the oldest lodge in the state of New Mexico, and the only Lodge to be chartered in the first year of New Mexico statehood. For over 100 years, the Lodge has served the Lovington area in innumerable ways. If you are a Sojourning Mason, we would love to have you drop on by the Lodge during our regular meetings. Members listed on the original Charter were Emery M. Caudill, William Teas, James M. Roden, Sr., Robert F. Love, Ham Bishop, Matthew E. Sewall, George W. Ausley, George W. Blake, and Hamp Scott. . . We were originally founded as a Moon Lodge. Around the time of our Charter, some Lodges met on the night of the full moon. In rural areas, this was done for two primary reasons. First, as Masons were traveling by horseback to attend the meetings, the illumination of the full moon allowed them the safest and most illuminated night travel to and from the Lodge. And secondly, and equally as important, since communication was tedious at best, it was an easy way to remember the stated meetings, being on the night of the full moon.. .
