In January 2013, I was looking for a board book on the Solar System to give as a gift for a 1st birthday.
I was surprised I could not find one.
I spent the next several weeks researching and was disappointed to find how few science books are available for children younger than 6.
I discovered the science books for 6- and 7-year-olds, though wonderful, are too advanced for a child who has had limited exposure to science..

This got me thinking about science illiteracy and how this gap in books could be contributing to the problem.
As a middle school science teacher, I have noticed many of my students arrive in the fall frightened and insecure about science.
They seem to have already decided that science isn’t for them, either because they think they are not smart enough or because they have been taught by our culture that it is not cool.
Also, the kids seem to associate science with old white men, leaving female and minority students feeling disconnected with the content..

This is where my journey began, and I am thrilled to be creating a new kind of book series.
Infants are exposed to letters, numbers, colors, animals and shapes in baby books.
So, I thought, why not expose them to basic scientific vocabulary and ideas in the same way? My cat, Lila, became the inspiration for a wonderful main character, and I got to work.
Each book will come in three volumes; the first is a baby book, the second has a bit more content for the toddlers and the third is an adventure book hosted by Lila and her dog friend Charlie.
The idea is to scaffold the vocabulary and content in such a way that when the child does reach the age of 6 or 7, the science books already available will be just right rather than overwhelming..

I have a lot of faith in this project and believe there will be many more books to come.
This series will allow parents and children to discover science together.
I believe that helping our little ones develop a love and appreciation for science early in life is important.
