Detailed description is We study the molecular mechanisms of adolescent brain development and how they shape affective and addictive, as well as resiliency, outcomes in adulthood. There are two periods in post-natal life when the brain undergoes dramatic changes, in the first two years of life, and then, in adolescence. Very little research is performed examining molecular processes that govern adolescent brain development. In recent years imaging studies have demonstrated that the adolescent brain undergoes massive pruning and myelination, but beyond that, at the molecular level, almost nothing is known about this developmental period. . . What also characterizes adolescence is that in conjunction with the massive reorganization that occurs in the brain during that time, raid exposure to many new experiences also takes place. This is a time of expanding social skills, increase in the ability to think abstractly, and acquiring greater independence, However, this is also a time of experimentation with drugs and other potential risky behaviors. Unfortunately it is also a time when symptoms of potentially life-long mental illness begin to manifest.. . In our lab we study molecular mechanisms of adolescent brain development and how the adolescent brain uniquely responds to environmental stimuli to shape affective and addictive outcomes in adulthood. In addition to studying potential vulnerabilities of the adolescent brain at the molecular level, we also study molecular mechanisms of potential resilience. We believe that during adolescent brain development the brain harnesses particularly effective mechanism of regulating protein aggregation and preventing the formation of pathological protein aggregates despite high expression. Studying these potential effective molecular strategies of regulating protein aggregation during adolescence may shed light onto the pathological processes that result in toxic aggregate formation and neurodegeneration in the aging brain.
