Lantern Cottage is a charming 400 year-old fisherman's cottage, ideally placed at the foot of the famous 199 steps. Although at the very heart of Whitby's picturesque old-town and therefore within yards of quaint shops, inns and cafes, it offers absolute seclusion through its location on Kiln Yard, a private, gated courtyard adjacent to the bustle of Church Street. The beautiful Tate Hill Beach, nestled along the harbour's inner pier lies less than a minute's walk away with the Whitby Jet Museum, Fortune's celebrated smokehouse as well as numerous delightful coastal trails likewise just a short stroll.. . A rare bonus for such a central location is that the cottage boasts its own Mediterranean-style patio garden offering a perfect suntrap, ideal for BBQs and alfresco dining, unwinding with a good book or relaxing after a day's ramble. The cottage itself holds a 4* Visit England rating and is almost unique in that although recently re-furbished, great care has been taken to preserve its authenticity. As such, original features like exposed wood flooring, beamed ceilings and rough plaster walls with timber framing have been retained. These touches, combined with tasteful period furniture, ensure that the cottage feels much the same as in the days of Cook or Stoker. . . The arrangement briefly comprises a ground floor featuring cosy sitting room with gas burning stove, Sky television, bathroom and WC. A kitchen / dining room with a second gas burning stove occupies the lower ground whilst a beautifully presented main bedroom with cast-iron double bed with high quality fabrics and linen can be found on floor one. A twin, second floor attic bedroom, again with cast-iron bedsteads completes the cottage and offers partial views of the harbour. As in most cottages of this type, the staircases can be quite steep and so we ask that you please bear this in mind before booking. Although it is possible to load and unload baggage outside the cottage, the nearest car parking is at the opposite end of Church Street, which is approximately a 5 minute walk. . . A welcome pack of wine, milk, tea, coffee plus a few little extras is provided for every full-week booking with items such as travel cots also available by prior arrangement. Small, well-behaved dogs are welcome although we ask that these are restricted to the lower ground floor when within the cottage. Treats for pooch are provided too!
