Lane Lincoln Christian Methodist Episcopal Church

200 Tanner Rd

Larue,

Kentucky,United-states - 42748

Detailed description is We are a member of the Second Episcopal District Christian Methodist Episcopal Church of the Louisville/Lexington District History of Lane Lincoln Memorial CME Church.
.
1867 to Present.
.
This document is compiled from court records, old Church documents, and old church person's recollections and from the memory of the late Jessie R.
Quinn..
.
The original deed was made on the 13th of February 1867 between Jerome and Martha S.
Smith, who sold the land to Lou Handley, Albert Woodson and J.
W.
french, Trustees of the "Colored" Methodist Church for $50.00 cash.
The location was the northwet corner of Hodgenville and a small frame church was erected.
Approximately 2 years later, this building was torn down and a new buiding was erected in the "Georgetown" section where most of the black populace was located.
In 1870, this building was struck by lightning and burned, Meetings were held in the school building until C.
N.
McGill and the trustees built a church on Lincoln Boulebvard at the corner of Tanner Road.
The present edificer was erected in 1968..
.
The General Conference in Jackson, TN named the churches in the conference, the "Colored Methodist Episcopal Church." In 1958, the name was changed to the "Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.".
.
After the Baptist Church was established, both churches attempted to hold worship services each Sunday.
However, due to the size of the community and inter-marriages between the two congregations it was found that it was not feasible.
So at a joint meeting, the decision was made to have services as follows: Lane Lincoln has church on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Sundays; and the Baptist held service on the 2nd and 4th Sundays.
This union developed into a unity that embraces the Biblical fact that we are NOT going to Heaven because of denomination but because we are CHRISTIANS serving ONE God..
.
Efforts to maintain the early church involved varied activities by the officers and members such as social suppers, mock conferences, woman-less weddings, and plays.
The "assessed dues" those days were 25 cents per member and increased to $1.00 in 1932.
For rallies or special days the asking rate was $3.00 to $5.00.
Yet, the Lord continued to the and church continued to grow.
The (late) Jessie R.
Quinnm, a Deacon at 1st Baptist, often remarked the METHODIST CHURCH was "built on Sanctification and Holiness." Early records indicate that Prayer Meetings, Sunday School and Class Meetings were well attended by both young and old.
During the early years, there was a feast each Friday before the Quarterly Conference and a Love Feast on Saturday night..
.
During the late 1950's, inside restrooms were added under the pastorate of Rev.
O.
K.
Matthews.
However, the building was in such ill-repair that Bishop B.
W.
Doyle assigned Rev.
J.
C.
Wilson to this charge for the purpose of building a church..
.
The pastor, (Rev.
Wilson), officers and contractor (Mr.
Lipscomb) met in Cincinnati late in 1967 with Bishop Doyle and was told that if the church could provide 1/2 of the $15,000.00 down payment, the conference would provide the other half.
Our building fund had $2,239.00 and we were only offered $1,500.00 for the old church building.
The selling of the old church was placed in the hands of the contractor who received $3,000.00 for it on March 28, 1968.
Our pastor then solicited the assistance of this and surrounding counties with a positive response.
Actual work began on May 18, 1968 on the land where the parsonage previously stood.
One Trustee, Bro.
Hiter Garrett being retired, spent countless hours making sure that everything was going well and personally donated the Marquee Board that now stands in front of the church..
.
At the time of building the new edifice, th officers were: Augustus Thurman, Art Skaggs, Hiter Garrett, Earl Thomas, Charles Thurman Jr., Columbus Doty, Richard Thurman and Donald L.
Thurman..
.
Until our church building was completed, Rev.
Donohue Price and Officers of 1st Baptist allowed us to use their facilities without charge.
Again, we must give thanks to our ALMIGHTY GOD for the spirit of cooperation..
