Üniversite Almanya'nın önde gelen araştırma yapan üniversitelerinden biridir.TarihiKöln Üniversitesi 1388 yılında kurulmuş olup Kutsal Roma-Cermen İmparatorluğunda Prag Üniversitesi, Viyana Üniversitesi ve Heidelberg Ruprecht Karls Üniversitesi'nin ardından kurulan 4. üniversitedir. Üniversite eğitime 6 Haziran 1389'da eğitime başladı. Tüzüğü Papa 6. Urban tarafından imzalanmıştır. 1798'de üniversite Fransızlar tarafından kapatıldı.1919'da Prusya hükümeti üniversitenin tekrar açılmasını gündeme getirdi. 19 Mayıs 1919 tarihinde dönemin belediye başkanı üniversitenin yeniden açılmasına dair kararı imzaladı. Üniversiteye yıllar içinde yeni bölümler eklendi. Üniversite ekonomi alanında lider olup, hukuk alanında ise ilk 3'te gösterilmektedir.YapısıÜniversite Kuzey Ren-Wesfalya Eyaletine bağlıdır. Akademik olarak 7 fakülte ve 200 alanda eğitim verilmektedir. 47.000'den fazla öğrencinin 6.150'si yabancı öğrencilerden oluşmaktadır. Yabancı öğrenci oranı toplam öğrencilerin %13'üne denk gelmektedir.
