Detailed description is KM Biofriendly Pest Control Initiative: A to promote environmentally friendly pest and weed control..
Welcome to our KM Bio-friendly Pest Control Initiative.
We invite you to join us in conversation about the need and means for Bio-friendly Pest Control, and to assist in:.
.
Increasing public awareness as to the urgent need for change from the current use of toxic pesticides and to the grossly under utilized, more eco friendly, biological means presently available for change; facilitating access to published studies by the scientific and medical communities and the informed opinion of recognizable, creditable authorities, worldwide; and inviting all those concerned to join an Initiative to reduce our exposure to harmful pesticides and become a part of the solution..
.
______________.
.
The need for change is undeniable.
.
Just reading the US Department of Health’s Report to President Abama in April, 2010, for example; shouldn’t we all be concerned?.
.
An abstract of this report is as follows:.
.
The President’s Cancer Panel U.S.
DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES National Institutes of Health National Cancer Institute.
.
“Dear Mr.
President:.
.
Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, the disease continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans.
In 2009 alone, approximately 1.5 million.
.
April, 2010American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease.
With the growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer, the public is becoming increasingly aware of the unacceptable burden of cancer resulting from environmental and occupational exposures that could have been prevented through appropriate national action.
The Administration’s commitment to the cancer community and recent focus on critically needed reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act is praiseworthy.
However, our Nation still has much work ahead to identify the many existing but unrecognized environmental carcinogens and eliminate those that are known from our workplaces, schools, and homes.”.
.
Abstracting from page 45 of the Report:.
.
“Nearly 1,400 pesticides have been registered (i.e., approved) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for agricultural and non-agricultural use.214 Exposure to these chemicals has been linked to brain/central nervous system (CNS), breast, colon, lung, ovarian (female spouses), pancreatic, kidney, testicular, and stomach cancers, as well as Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and soft tissue sarcoma.147 Pesticide-exposed farmers, pesticide applicators, crop duster pilots, and manufacturers also have been found to have elevated rates of prostate cancer, melanoma, other skin cancers, and cancer of the lip.”.

.
The Basic Means for Change is Available.
.
Referring again to the President’s Cancer Panel Report of April, 2010, one of the recommendations proposes a change from the after-the-fact, Reactionary Approach to Regulations that is currently applied in the United States, to the Precautionary Principle that operates to prevent the registration of harmful chemicals prior to any problem occurring.
The following is an abstract:.
.
“Prevailing regulation approach in the US is reactionary, in that it:”.
.
• “Require incontrovertible evidence of harm before preventive action is taken.”.
.
• “Places the burden on the public to show that a given chemical is harmful.” • “Does not consider potential health and environmental impact when designing new technology.”.
.
• “Discourages public participation in decision-making about the control of hazards and the introduction of new technology chemicals, or other exposure.”.
.
“This Reactionary Approach typically engenders secondary prevention measures (e.g.
screening, other methods for early detection of disease) once a health hazard has been become evident, rather than action to remove the hazard from the environment (primary prevention).”.
.
“The core tenets of the Precautionary Principle are:”.
.
• “Taking preventive action in the face of uncertainty.”.
.
• “Shifting the burden of proof to proponents of an activity.”.
.
• “Exploring a wide range of alternatives to possible harmful actions.”.
.
• “Including public participation in decision-making.”.
.
“Participants at the Panel’s meeting suggested that the precautionary approaches may encourage innovation because once a chemical or other agent is identified as potential hazardous, efforts to identify safer alternatives is likely to follow.”.
.
Self-Advocacy for Change is Our Personal Challenge.
.
Again quoting from the President’s Cancer Panel Report of April, 2010, one of its recommendations covered “Self-Advocacy” and what we can do personally.
To abstract:.
.
“Each person can become an active voice in his or her community.” “To a greater extent than many realize, individuals have the power to affect public policy by letting policymakers know that they strongly support environmental cancer research and measures that will reduce or remove from the environment toxics that are known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.” “Individuals also can influence industry by selecting non-toxic products and, where these do not exist, communicating with manufacturers and trade organizations about their desire for safer products.”.
.
The Report is quite clear that the gauntlet has been throw out to each and every one of us to take an active part and be involved in the solution of this extremely serious health and environmental problem..
.
Need for Change – Additional References US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
.
“Infants and children may be especially sensitive to health risks posed by pesticides for several reasons:.
.
• their internal organs are still developing and maturing, • in relation to their body weight, infants and children eat and drink more than adults, possibly increasing their exposure to pesticides in food and water..
.
• certain behaviors–such as playing on floors or lawns or putting objects in their mouths–increase a child’s exposure to pesticides used in homes and yards.”.
.
“Pesticides may harm a developing child by blocking the absorption of important food nutrients necessary for normal healthy growth.
Another way pesticides may cause harm is if a child’s excretory system is not fully developed, the body may not fully remove pesticides.
Also, there are “critical periods” in human development when exposure to a toxin can permanently alter the way an individual’s biological system operates.”.
