Wallace Elementary-Wallace Middle-Kernville Elementary Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! This year’s theme is “Keep Calm and Carry On”.
We chose this theme as we continue to implement Common Core strategies and standards within our core classes: math, reading and language arts.
The teachers and staff are working hard to bring top-notch education to our children as we get ready for 21st Century Learning.
We are learning together on what that looks like in each class and grade level.
We have questions and I know you will too.
Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher and school principal with the questions and comments you have to the changes.

The next change was taking the Local Control Accountability Plan that the District Advisory Committee planned last year, and bringing it to fruition.
The cost for each goal of the plan is in our current budget.
With that you will see additional staff: Behavior Specialist, Ms.
Ortega, will help teachers help students with disrupting behavior in the classroom.
She will also meet with “drama” groups in an effort to resolve conflict before it grows.
Her other hat will be to teach a life skill class.
The class isn’t for physical survival, but emotional survival and social norms.
Another change is increased computer tech time.
With the addition of computers to students and to staff, an important aspect of 21st Century Learning, we need training and maintenance of the equipment.
We welcome Trisha Jones to the team as our Computer Technician.
The Special Program department added an Emotionally Disturbed class, which helps with children of trauma and other disabilities that make a general education classroom difficult.

How do we pay for all of these changes? One way is sharing the 2 elementary school district’s resources.
Kernville Union and South Fork Union have combined several positions including CBO, Superintendent, Special Ed.
Director, Speech, Nurse, Behavior Specialist, Math Coach, and psychologist.
The other way is the increased revenue from the State’s budget to education, known as the Local Control Funding Formula..
Other changes that you will see are the new smiling faces that have joined the campus.
Ms.
Russell is our new elementary school principal.
She comes to us from Bakersfield City School District.
She has a long list of accomplishments including training teachers in cumulative skills assessment, benchmark setting and articulation of standards.
She also co-authored award winning curriculum to help increase reading comprehension and writing! In addition, she was a classroom teacher and an administrator at Wayside elementary school.
Whew! That’s quite a list.

Mr.
Perez joins us as a vice-principal and HOPE director.
You will see him at Kernville elementary school during the morning and in the HOPE program in the afternoon.
He also comes to us from BCSD, where he was a math teacher at high school and middle school levels.
He also mentored students, has extensive experience with PBIS, our Positive Behavior Intervention System, and is very active in running – known to run 100 mile races and a marathon a year! He brings these activities and his love for physical education to our programs.
Our teaching staff has a few changes as well: Ms.
Freeman – science, Ms.
Pinion – math, Mr.
Cosgrove- 7th grade, Ms.
Smith – Rio Vista, Ms.
Click- 6th grade, Ms.
Stirling- 5th grade, Ms.
Van De Walker- kindergarten, and Ms.

Hollinger was added as our Speech Pathologist intern.
