The Keegan Scot Southers Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 2010 to honor the spirit and memory of a boy named Keegan Scot Southers. Keegan Scot Southers was born on July 8, 2009 with Congenital Heart Disease, Heterotaxy Syndrome. In May 2010, he was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy and was placed on a heart transplant list as this was his only option for survival. He waited valiantly on the transplant list for 80 days, but lost his battle with heart disease on July 25, 2010 when his little heart could not hold on any longer and he passed away at 3:44 AM. He was such a little fighter and his strong spirit touched many people during his short life. . Keegan’s family wants to assist students who have overcome a similar battle in reaching their goals of higher education. To be eligible for this scholarship, the student must show proof that they have been diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease and/or received a heart transplant. The Heterotaxy Foundation was created in 2009 to provide much needed information on a rare disease called Heterotaxy Syndrome, which affects various organs in the body (stomach, spleen, intestines) and is synonymous with congenital heart defects.
