Detailed description is My name is Juarez Lee-Shelton, and I am running for ATU Local 1300 Executive Board Seat #3 (Transportation). AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF JUAREZ LEE-SHELTON. . Some of you know me very well, others, a little, some not at all. Therefore allow me to introduce myself formally. My name is Juarez Lee-Shelton, many refer to me by my nickname “Walt”. I am a thirty-year old operator based at Northwest Division, and have been a bus operator with MTA for six and a half years. I trained at Northwest Division, (January-March 2010), spent my part time days at Kirk Division (March-September 2010), and returned to Northwest when my class was elevated to full time (September 2010-present). In January 2014, I was chosen for a spot on ATU 1300’s election committee, and have done my civic duty in that role on multiple occasions. I found the experience to be fulfilling, giving me a first hand taste of the inner workings of many aspects of the union per se. April 2014, I was selected to be a Union Instructor, a role in which I have cherished ever since. As a union instructor, I have successfully facilitated the completion of training of nine new operators, six of which are at Northwest with myself. In July 2014, I was chosen to be a Shop Steward at Northwest Division, joining four other colleagues in that role. I have participated in, and contributed to both base level and upper management hearings with experienced stewards. This has given me important substantive knowledge in this often career saving position. . . Nearly my entire career life has been spent in working with people directly, and MTA is the most recent star on that flag. From 2004-2005 I worked in a paralegal format for tax sale attorneys representing clients in recovering properties in Baltimore City from tax-sale foreclosure. From 2005-2010, I worked for the District Court of Maryland for Baltimore City- Civil Division. While there, I assisted customers on how to file various type of civil claims paperwork, processed multiples types of pre-judgment, inter-trial, and post-judgment pleadings. Additionally, I built case files, maintained records, and towards the end of my time there, I served in a quasi-supervisory role overseeing eight other fellow employees. The law is my other passion in life, and my long term career goal. I will bring this experience with the law to you as member of the Executive Board.. . My academic life bears a direct role in my knowledge and abilities dealing with both the political and legal realm. I hold a B.A. degree from the University of Baltimore in History, and am presently working on an M.A. there in Legal and Ethical Studies. This academic program gives one the foundations required to hit the ground moving in law school, by teaching you legal writing, legal research skills, legal analysis, brief preparation, and oral advocacy skills. Upon graduation, I plan on attending law school, also at the University of Baltimore and becoming a licensed Maryland attorney- all of which will be done while still at the MTA. I plan on using my license to practice law in multiple areas including the professional protection of 1300 from the aggressive legal prowess that MTA uses against the membership. My desire is to safeguard and protect the interests of this local now and in the future to the best of my abilities and with your help, this can go from being a mere aspiration, to a reality. . . . With me, you have a candidate who brings a great deal of not only academic knowledge, but a tremendous amount of real world experience in working with the public, as well as the legal system well before I came to MTA, and thus I humbly ask for your vote for EXECUTIVE BOARD SEAT #3, with the greater good of all of our interests in mind as ONE 1300!
