Five shallow wells were drilled near the crest of the Jerudong anticline. However the site was abandoned in 1915 due to "sliding formations".British Malayan Petroleum Company Ltd. (a Dutch Shell subsidiary) renewed drilling in 1940 with a new well designated Jerudong No. 1 which was abandoned as a dry hole at the depth of 7,967 feet. Drilling of a well designated Jerudong No. 2 began on May 5 1955 and reached "oil-bearing formation" in July at a depth between 3,500 and 3,600 feet. As a follow-up to Jerudong No. 2 which discovered oil in 1955, Jerudong No 3 had been spudded in mid-September west of the Jerudong No. 2 site. Jerudong No. 4 depth was 6,070 feet; Jerudong No. 5 reached 8,210 feet; Jerudong No. 6 went to 6,580.
