Detailed description is Das Japanische Palais ist ein historisches Bauwerk in der Inneren Neustadt von Dresden. Es liegt zwischen Palaisplatz und Neustädter Elbufer. Das Japanische Palais dient heute als Museumsgebäude und beherbergt das Museum für Völkerkunde und die Senckenberg Naturhistorischen Sammlungen. Es ist der ehemalige Sitz des Landesmuseums für Vorgeschichte, das sich heute als Staatliches Museum für Archäologie (smac) in Chemnitz befindet.GeschichteDas ursprüngliche und heute als solches nicht mehr erkennbare Gebäude geht auf einen im Jahr 1715 von Rudolph Faesch für Jakob Heinrich Graf von Flemming errichteten Landhausbau zurück. Ende desselben Jahres bezog es der holländische Gesandte Harsolde von Craneburg (dort am 29. Januar 1716 verstorben), weshalb es älteren Schriftquellen zufolge seinen Namen als Holländisches Palais erhalten habe. Tatsächlich rekurriert der Name wohl eher auf die besonders gestaltete Gartenlandschaft, die nach typisch holländischen Vorbildern, etwa Het Loo angelegt worden war. Bereits 1717 wechselte es jedoch in den Besitz von August dem Starken über, der hier Porzellan- und Kunstsammlungen unterbringen wollte, jedoch dieses Vorhaben nicht verwirklichte. Am 10. September 1719 veranstaltete der Kurfürst hier ein Fest im Kontext der Hochzeit seines Sohnes mit der Kaisertochter. Im Jahr 1722 kaufte Flemming im Umfeld mehrere Bürgerhäuser auf, um seinen Grundbesitz dort zu erweitern. Im Tausch gegen ein anderes Palais in der Landhausstraße erhielt der das Holländische Palais vom Kurfürsten wieder zurück. Bei dieser Übertragung war auch das damals vorhandene Inventar inbegriffen, darunter zahlreiche wertvolle Porzellangegenstände. Der Kurfürst hatte ein anhaltendes Interesse an dem Palais und nahm es 1726 wieder in seinen Besitz. Gleichzeitig gab er Planungen für dessen Umbau in Auftrag. Am 26. Juli 1727 richtete man in den Räumlichkeiten ein Abschiedsfest aus und der Bau wurde danach wegen der bevorstehenden Umgestaltungsarbeiten geräumt.
