Our Son, Brother, Grandson, Nephew, Cousin, and Friend...Jacob Lee Schultz passed away by drowning on August 30th 2013. He was 4 years, 4 months, 12 days, 8 hours and 50 minutes young. Drowning is the number 2 cause of child deaths from ages 0 to 14 years old. We never want the families to feel the pain of this kind of loss so in HONOR of Jacob Lee Schultz, his Memorial Fund is offering FREE swimming lessons, free life jackets and water safety presentations to any and all in need! . . The goals of JLS continue to grow. Our main focus is to teach ALL children, no matter their age, to swim. According to the Jim Montgomery Swim School, “Last year nine children died every day from drowning”. Learning to swim is the number one cure for drowning. In the interim we are putting other measures in place to ensure the safety of all who are in or near the water. We currently have a program in place to provide life jackets to those who are unable to afford them. To date, we have put over 500 life jackets in the hands of those in need and we want to be able to continue to provide this service. Taking a cue from the DNR and the Eau Claire Water Safety Task Force, we have built and place loaner boards, filled with life jackets at several key locations around the Chippewa Valley. These boards have been a great resource to those who may not spend a great deal of time around the water, or have forgotten to bring these life-saving devised for their children. . . Through our fundraising efforts over the last year and a half, we have sponsored around 200 swimming lessons. As a grassroots organization we have raised over $15,000.00 towards this cause confirming in our minds just how important this is to the community. In November of 2014 we were honored to receive the William H. Perloff “Keeping Kids Alive in Wisconsin’ Award.. According to the census bureau in 2014, the overall population of Chippewa County included over 13,000 children under the age of 18. Drowning is the number one cause of death for children under 5, and the number two cause of death for children up to age 14. Over 6,000 children and adults drown each years in swimming related accidents (Montgomery). Our program is not just limited to children, we also offer swimming lessons to adults, and all of the loaner bards include adult size life jackets.. All of the staff involved in this organization are volunteer. There are no paid positions. At any given time there are upwards of ten volunteers.. There are a multitude of areas in the Chippewa Valley that will benefit immensely from this program and are in need of these safety measures. We will continue to honor the legacy of Jacob, who we now know would still be with us today, if he would have known how to swim, or had an available life jacket on that fateful day..
