The Initiative for Research and Innovation in Science (IRIS) has been nurturing the spirit of innovation among school students in India since 2006, having its humble beginning in 1999 as the Intel Science Talent Discovery Fair. An admirable example of a public-private partnership, this is a nationwide initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India (DST), the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Intel Education. For over a decade, Intel Education has been working with countries, communities, and schools worldwide to bring the resources and solutions needed for advancing education, and collaborating with governments and policy-makers to turn their vision into reality. The aim is to infuse the spirit of discovery in school children, increase their interest in science and technology, and build a robust scientific temper among the youth of the country.. . IRIS National Science Fair - Initiative for Research & Innovation in Science – is an outstanding example of public–private partnership initiated by the Intel Technology India (Intel) with Department of Science & Technology Government of India (DST), and Indo-US Science & Technology Forum (IUSSTF) for empowering the next generation of innovators. . . In 2013, with the aim to reach out to more students and get wider participation, IRIS affiliated with 4 of India’s leading school level science fairs to emerge as the largest research based science fair in the country: . . · Jawaharlal Nehru National Science Exhibition for Children, an initiative of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) . · National Children’s Science Congress, conducted by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC). · National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) . · CBSE Science Exhibition, for Central Board of Secondary Education schools across India (CBSE). . Under collaboration between Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF), Department of Science & Technology, and Intel; the team will continue on a week long Science Learning Tour post Intel ISEF 2014, Los Angeles. During this period, students will be visiting research laboratories, meeting with key scientists and exploring various science museums in the United States of America.. . Each year, research based science projects by young students, across 17 subject categories—are reviewed by an eminent jury comprising of scientists and domain experts, and the short-listed entries are showcased at the annual IRIS National Fair. This fair aims to promote and nurture science and scientific research among young Indian innovators; recognising and rewarding outstanding projects, and providing a platform for winning students to represent India at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, held annually in the U.S. Till 2014, a total of 82 Indian students have won 102 awards and accolades at Intel ISEF competing against more than 6 million high school students from across the world. Winners at the Intel ISEF not only win laurels for the nation but also get the opportunity to have a minor planet named after them.
