The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) at the University of California, Santa Cruz is a laboratory for theorizing and implementing new visions of the Humanities via research projects, graduate education, and public programs.

Established in 1999, the IHR has grown dramatically since its inception and now serves as an umbrella institution for eight centers including the Center for Cultural Studies, the Center for Labor Studies, the Center for Jewish Studies, the Center for Mediterranean Studies, the Center for the Study of Pacific War Memories, the Center for World History, the Linguistics Research Center, and the Institute for Advanced Feminist Research.

In addition to these established centers, the IHR hosts an annual competition to encourage new research collaborations both within the Humanities and between the Humanities and the Social and Physical Sciences.
The winners of this competition are designated Research Clusters and receive financial and logistical support from the IHR.
In the past year, Research Clusters have included Borders, Bodies, and Violence; Crosslinguistic Investigations in Syntax-Phonology; Latino Literary Cultures/Proyecto Culturas Literarias Latinas; Urban Studies, and several others.

With these and other initiatives, the IHR serves as an incubator for new ideas and provides crucial support to faculty and students at every stage of the research process.
One of our key functions is to identify promising graduate students and to help them become productive researchers through mentorship programs, fellowships, and internship opportunities.
