Detailed description is Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikastudien, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz Das Institut für Ethnologie und Afrikastudien wurde 1946 bei der Neugründung der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz als „Institut für Völkerkunde“ gegründet und ist heute eine interdisziplinäre Einrichtung, die sich durch eine in Deutschland einmalige Bandbreite der Lehr- und Forschungsaktivitäten auszeichnet. Diese reichen von der Politik-, Religions- und Wirtschaftsethnologie über Ethnologie und Entwicklung, Ethnizität und Kolonialismus bis hin zu Medienethnologie, Migrations- und Diasporaforschung und afrikanische Literaturen und Sprachen, Musik und populäre Kultur. Dabei gilt das besondere Interesse der Lehre und Forschung am Institut dem zeitgenössischen Afrika. Großer Wert wird auf die Zusammenarbeit mit afrikanischen Kolleginnen und Kollegen gelegt, ohne die Afrikawissenschaften heute nicht mehr denkbar sind. Das bedeutet einerseits die regelmäßige Anwesenheit von afrikanischen GastdozentInnen, DoktorandInnen und Studierenden am Institut und andererseits Feldforschungen, Vortragsreisen und Lehraufenthalte von Institutsmitgliedern in den afrikanischen Partnerländern. Außerdem zeichnet sich das Institut durch hohe Forschungsintensität aus, was sich nicht nur in der Höhe der eingeworbenen Drittmittel niederschlägt, sondern vor allem auch darin, dass Forschung und Lehre eng miteinander verknüpft sind und fortgeschrittene Studierende in Forschungsprojekte einbezogen werden.. Folgende Studiengänge werden angeboten: . - der Bachelorstudiengang Ethnologie (als Kernfach oder Beifach) mit dem Abschluss Bachelor of Arts in Ethnologie . - der Masterstudiengang Ethnologie mit dem Abschluss Master of Arts in Ethnologie . - der Masterstudiengang Linguistik mit dem Schwerpunkt Afrikanistik . - der Abschluss Dr. phil. in Ethnologie . - der Abschluss Dr. phil. in Afrikanischer Philologie (Afrikanistik).. . Im Jahr 2012 gingen die ehemalige Institutsbibliothek der Fächer Ethnologie und Afrikanische Philologie sowie die Jahn-Bibliothek und das Archiv für die Musik Afrikas (AMA) in die Zuständigkeit der Universitätsbibliothek über und erhielten den Status einer Bereichsbibliothek.. .
