Detailed description is PASCOM - Pastoral da Comunicação da Igreja Matriz de São José. Recife - PE.. Única igreja em estilo neoclássico do centro do Recife, a Matriz de São José é uma construção do século XIX, com frontispício austero e torres pesadas, conforme ficou após uma discutida restauração. Há um trabalho na fachada: mosaicos azuis e brancos, num semicírculo, de Francisco Brennand. Tochas com labaredas de pedra, adornam o muro do adro. Dois quadros dentro da igreja, de autor desconhecido, mostram Dom João Marques Perdigão, bispo da Diocese de Olinda, à época da construção do templo e o Deão Farias, personagem da época. Sua maior atração está nas portas internas da sua entrada principal, toda ela feita em pau-brasil. A criação da Paróquia se deu em 02 de maio de 1844 e a bênção e festa de inauguração ocorreram nos dias 07 e 08 de dezembro de 1864. Seu vigário, há mais de três décadas, é o padre José Augusto Esteves, que tentou várias alternativas para conseguir recursos que permitissem iniciarem-se as obras emergenciais... Mas isso é quase impossível, diante dos danos identificados e da impossibilidade de receber-se ali o apoio público, por não ser a Matriz tombada, nem a nível estadual, como nacional. Sem a proteção oficial dos órgãos de patrimônio, reconhece-se apenas que ela se encontra em um perímetro de tombamento, incluída no inventário de patrimônios religiosos do estado que está sendo realizado pelo IPHAN
