O Instituto de Ciências da Arte (ICA) foi criado em fevereiro de 2006, a partir da reunião de cursos e atividades artísticas que estavam dispersos entre o Núcleo de Arte e o Departamento de Arte do antigo Centro de Letras e Artes..

Mas a história dos cursos de Artes na UFPA remonta a 1962, quando foi criado o curso de Teatro.
No ano seguinte foi criado o de Música.
Em 1968, foram implantadas as atividades de Dança.
Em 1974 surgiu a primeira graduação na área, com o curso de Educação Artística / Habilitação em Artes Plásticas e, em 1991, a Habilitação em Música.
O Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes foi implantado em 2009..

A estrutura acadêmico-administrativa do ICA compreende a Escola de Teatro e Dança (ETDUFPA), a Escola de Música (EMUFPA), a Faculdade de Artes Visuais e Museologia (FAM) e o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes (PPG-Artes), onde são oferecidos cursos técnicos, de graduação e de pós-graduação lato e stricto sensu.
