Hrvatski savez dijabetičkih udruga osnovan je 1954.
godine.
HSDU je dobrovoljna socijalno-humanitarna organizacija kojoj je cilj unapređivanje medicinske i socijalne zaštite osoba oboljelih od šećerne bolesti.
Misija HSDU-a je uključivanje što većeg broja osoba sa šećernom bolešću u aktivno članstvo te opća skrb o oboljelima od šećerne bolesti, uz nastojanje da se osposobi što veći broj oboljelih da upravlja svojom bolešću i životom uz pomoć zdravstvenog osoblja i nas.

Od 1955.
godine postaje članom Međunarodne dijabetičke federacije (IDF)., što i danas značajno pridonosi boljoj organizaciji i sadržaju rada naših 46 udruga u Republici Hrvatskoj.
Međunarodni kontakti, posebice na regionalnoj razini u IDF Europe, pomažu da HSDU usmjerava i obogaćuje svoje aktivnosti novima koje su provedive u RH.

U svom radu HSDU je povezan sa Sveučilišnom klinikom Vuk Vrhovac KB Merkur koja je referentni centar za dijabetes u RH, regionalnim i županijskim centrima za dijabetes, Ministarstvom zdravlja i Vladom RH, domovima zdravlja, uredima za zdravstvo, Hrvatskim zavodom za javno zdravstvo, Hrvatskih zavodom za zdravstveno osiguranje i Školom narodnog zdravlja Andrija Štampar.
