Detailed description is The Pillar of Faith Award is named in honor of the late James Floyd Jenkins,which recognizes and encourages excellence in ministry. The Pillar of Faith Award named in honor of the late James Floyd Jenkins, the Pillar of Faith Award recognizes and encourages excellence in ministry by honoring clergy and lay leaders who have dedicated their lives to improving their communities. . . Mr. Jenkins, a layman, community advocate and found member of the United Church of Christ (UCC) Friends of Howard University School of Divinity, led discussions on the historical connection between the UCC and its American Missionary Association (AMA) and Howard University. As a result of these discussions, the UCC pledged to make a $500,000 challenge grant to establish an endowed academic chair and Ph.D. Program in Religious Studies.. . As an active supporter of the campaign to raise funds needed to claim the challenge grant, the Pillar of Faith Award was established in memory of James Floyd Jenkins in 2001. Recipients of the award are individuals who have made an extraordinary impact on students, peers, academic institutions and churches, as well as wider and global community.. . The James Floyd Jenkins Pillar of Faith Awards Luncheon is co-sponsered by Howard University School of Divinity and the UCC Friends of HUSD to raise funds for the AMA Endowed Chair and Ph.D. program. This chair will provide direct support of at least $1.5 M to the Ph.D. program in religious studies.
