Detailed description is HOSA is an active community organization whose members work to preserve, promote and protect the unique charm of our historic Ocean Springs. The Historic Ocean Springs Association, known around town as "HOSA", is one of the most respected and successful community groups in Ocean Springs. Originally, HOSA was organized by small business owners and others interested in improving the look of downtown Ocean Springs. We knew Ocean Springs was cool before the rest of the world discovered us, and we put our talents, sweat equity and time into sprucing up the historic heart of the city. The #1 project of HOSA was and is the restoration and continued upkeep of Marshall Park, the 100 year old greenspace that welcomes everyone into the heart of the downtown historic area. HOSA moved the bandstand back to the Park and continues to spend over $10,000 annually on the maintenance and decoration of Marshall Park as a gift to the community. Amongst the long list of HOSA projects include: the decorative railings and lights on Shearwater Bridge; the pavilion and wooden walkway in Little Children's Park; the restoration of the HOSA Community Room at the Mary C, which was the first room renovated at the Cultural Center; the creation of the HOSA John Blossman Memorial Garden at Shearwater Park; the design and creation of wooden street signs downtown; and donation of crepe myrtles, trees and other plantings all over town, including the two large replacement live oaks placed at the City's Marquee area at the corner of Hwy. 90 & Washington Avenue. HOSA also created the Bob & Virginia Meyer Award, the most prestigious annual honor given for an outstanding construction, renovation or other significant project. The organization created the HOSA Joe Tinney Memorial Scholarship Fund, annually presents scholarships to local high school seniors. HOSA has partnered with other local groups on numerous projects, including the recent installation of a Blue Star Memorial Plaque and Garden on the grounds of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, next to the Civic Center on Bienville Blvd, a project of HOSA and the OS Garden Club. HOSA was an original supporter of PAPOS: Public Art Project of Ocean Springs. Annual events HOSA helps organize and contributes to include the very popular "Trick or Treat Down the Street" on Halloween, where the downtown is blocked off and spirited businesses stay open to give out treats to about 3,000 local kids, and the decorating the City Christmas Tree in time to greet Santa on the first Thursday each December. HOSA is about community service, friendship and fun. Meetings are on the fourth Wednesday of most months at 5:30 in the HOSA Room at the Mary C. O'Keefe Cultural Center. New members are welcome!.
