Pre-School Track.

Students will begin the day by listening to Bible stories, sing worship songs, learn Bible verses, as well as other activities in this class.

Dedicated to protecting and nurturing the early years of childhood, Before Five in a Row opens up the world of learning through great books and creative play, and builds a solid foundation for more formal education to come.
Students will participate in a large variety of learning readiness activities built around outstanding children’s books that will prepare them for the deeper academic experience to come.
This is a 1 hour class.

This class, which has the same name as the curriculum that will be used, is a literature-based unit study that will cover social studies and character, language arts, math, science, and art.
Literature selections contain positive moral values reflecting Biblical values.
It is not necessary for a student to read in order to participate in this class.
Parents can expand on this class by using the Five in a Row curriculum at home, if so desired.

Do you have a reluctant young writer? Is your student ready to move beyond writing one word, but isn’t ready to write reports and stories? This class is for your student! We will focus on different types of words (homonyms, contractions, abbreviations, compound words), writing different types of sentences (questions, exclamations, declarative, interrogative) and repairing them.
By the end of the year we will be writing sentences with a purpose, such as giving instructions or answering questions.
Students will also learn the Greek and Latin roots of many English words from the program, English from the Roots Up.
This is a 1 hour 15 minute class.

The best way to become a better writer is to write! This class, as well as the previous one, helps alleviate fear and build basic skills and confidence in the student’s ability to write.
Writing Skills IV is a continuation of Writing Skills III but students do not have to have taken Skills III to join.
Students should already be familiar with writing complete sentences to take this class.
Students will begin by writing sentences and improving them with increased vocabulary, varying sentence lengths, and using commas appropriately.
By the end of the year students will be writing letters, poems, and short stories.
Students will also learn the Greek and Latin roots of many English words from the program, English from the Roots Up.

This is a unit study oriented class.

This is a unit study class based on the lives of important Christian men and women throughout history.
The class uses YWAM’s history and missionary biographies as the main texts.
Elements of history, literature, geography, art, science, and worldview are brought out through the reading and class activities.
Students will begin to piece together what types of events are happening around the world at the same time their story is taking place.
Each student will need their own book and will have reading assignments of several chapters per week at home between classes.
Students should be able to read and write independently to participate in class.

Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day – Martha Hand.

In this God-honoring study of birds, Exploring Creation with Zoology 1: Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day teaches your child about the glorious design and characteristics of flying creatures, including physical characteristics, nesting habits, flight patterns, and more! Your children will learn how to attract various bird species to your yard and identify them by looking at their special physical characteristics, diverse nests, and interesting domestic practices.

All are useful languages to study but the study of Hebrew can open our children’s hearts to the scriptures like no other language can.
Martin Luther rightfully claimed, “In the Hebrew language we hear God speak...thus study directed toward learning this language might rightly be called a kind of worship.” Students will begin by learning to read, write, and pronounce the Hebrew alphabet.
This is the biggest hurdle in Hebrew! This class is for students with no previous experience.
Moms are welcome, too.
This is a 1 hour class.

This is not a "conversational" course but is designed to teach grammar skills (many people eventually drop teaching any other grammar at all), focused thinking, and attention to detail.
It is not designed as a "taste of Latin" type course.
If your family is serious about Latin study as part of your homeschool, you can't go wrong with this course.
The weekly lessons keep the vocabulary small and do-able while teaching the grammar concepts.

Literature-Based Composition – Kathy Dupree.

Students will be taught to analyze literature on a deeper level more than for just enjoyment as they evaluate structure or techniques used in a literary passage or work.
This will include themes, mood, plot development, setting, characters, worldview of an author, vocabulary needed to better understand a selection, etc.
Literary selections may come from great works or classics written by authors of World, English or American literature, from novels, and from articles/columns in present day magazines, newspapers, etc.
in the form of short stories, poems, essays, plays, articles, etc.
The class will respond to questions, answer prompts, and discover underlying reasons for actions or meanings to stories/events/situations.
Through reading literature students will learn how authors influenced people's thinking and actions.
Although the focus will be on writing about class selections, the class may do other activities as part of the culmination of a finished piece to add variety and keep the class from being a drudgery.

Students in this class will take a more in-depth approach to writing at the high school and college level.
Grading is a bit stricter and requirements are more comprehensive than previous composition classes so that students can become prepared for grading at a college level.
In addition, all assignments are longer and more difficult than previous said classes.
We will explore most of the same essay types as before, incorporating new vocabulary words, techniques, approaches, and subjects through prompts and literature selections during the first semester.

This course focuses on preparing students to write the essay that is included in the SAT, one of the most important college entrance exams.
Students will begin by learning how to respond to a basic prompt and then build on that knowledge to create an insightful 3-5 paragraph response.
Students will also learn techniques to help them write faster and more efficiently by organizing their thoughts and learning crucial editing skills.
Finally, students will develop those skills into real speed and finesse, and by the end of the year, will be practicing the writing within the standard timeframe for the SAT, which is 30 minutes.

The class will also offer students an opportunity to brush-up on basic skills and offer insight on the test from the makers of the ACT.

This art appreciation class is the first of a 3-part art appreciation course.
The remaining 2 parts will be taught over the next 2 years, one semester per year.
This first art appreciation class will cover the Ancient Egyptian Period, the Classical Period (Ancient Greek and Ancient Roman) and the Byzantine Period.
It will present the art history of these periods, including art and architecture, as well as corresponding art projects.
This is a 1 hour class that will be offered one semester.

The following supplies are required for the class: art pad, #2 pencils, white eraser, kneaded eraser, and a 12” ruler.
