I started Helm Martial Arts because at the age of thirty I can now look back on my years and realize that my life was always better with Martial Arts in it.
Now that I have children of my own I feel a responsibility to pass on the benefits of Martial Arts should them or anybody else choose to venture down this path with me.
The benefits of Martial Arts go well beyond the physical gains, the mental gains can be just as great if not greater.
Our goal is to create an environment where a Martial Artist can not only maximize one’s physical growth, but also allow one to gain the confidence and focus to reach for their goals inside as well as outside the gym.

My Martial Arts base is Tae Kwon Do.
We will probably not look like any other Tae Kwon Do Dojo you may have come across.
The gym I grew up in was a mixture of Tae Kwon Do and Kenpo, but we followed the traditional forms and one-steps of Tae Kwon Do.
We will not do any forms here, but we will do a variation of traditional “one-steps.” Forms do serve a purpose, however I feel that we can extract those same principles that forms are useful for by using other, more effective methods.
I believe that we can build better Martial Artists that are more capable of defending themselves by taking the best from all of our experiences and applying them to what works today.
I strive to do this while still instilling the respect of traditional Martial Arts and it’s great history.

We will also not wear traditional “Karate” uniforms.
I do not feel these are necessary to learning any aspect of Martial Arts other than looking and sounding good during forms.
I also feel they stifle the creativity that Martial Arts in its very nature promotes.
Students are allowed to wear any pair of shorts and any design or color they would like as long as they are appropriate for Martial Arts activity.
Students will be required to wear a team shirt.
I feel that the same discipline can be taught through rules and exercises on the mat and that students creativity should not be hindered by a plain, white uniform.

We will use a belt system.
A belt system provides students with built in goals and a way to achieve them.
Our curriculum has certain requirements for each belt, but advancement will be more performance based as in modern day Jiu Jitsu.
It took me over ten years to earn my black belt, that was full time training and teaching Tae Kwon Do.
If you are looking for a quick black belt to hang on your wall, you’ve come to the wrong place.
A belt that you have to work for is more than just something to hold your pants up, its an accomplishment you can carry with you and be proud of for the rest of your life.

Our goal through this system, that is a mix of traditional martial arts and today’s more prevalent mixed martial arts, is that we will be able to instill the respect and discipline that is essential to a successful Martial Artist, as well as teach the knowledge that will have students completely prepared to defend themselves outside the gym.
We will kick, punch, grapple, submit, and learn to defend all of those things.
I’ve spent a lot of my life learning the most effective Martial Arts and will always continue my own education and evolution as a Martial Artist and pass that on to my students.
I hope that you will come along on this journey with me and my family as we try to optimize ourselves through Martial Arts.
