Detailed description is WELCOME to HAPPY APPLE ORCHARD: A family run orchard, located 10 minutes south of West Des Moines, in the rolling prairie grasslands of central Iowa.
Happy Apple Orchard was started in early 1970's.The original 2 dozen trees, that were planted on the farm, came from K-mart on Hickman Rd.
They were a end -of-the season close-out price, that Rick purchased while delivering landscape stone to their garden department.
The trees were label dwarf Red and Golden Delicious? They all turned out to be standard size, MacIntosh apple trees.
Rick Motzko thought this would be a good thing for the Cumming Farm his dad, Dick just purchased.
Dick Motzko got the bug to produce apples on a bigger scale.
Dick, Audrey, his wife, and son, Rick, planted and nurtured the trees, year after year, until it reached 4000 trees.
To this day some of the original tree still produce.
The first apples in production were simply given to friends.
Dick's dream was to produce apples on dwarf size trees that people could come and pick..
Dick and Audrey owned and operated the orchard until 1989.
Then they sold it to Rick and wife, Sue due to health reason.
They all worked and grew the business.
At one point, we sold to all Dahl's stores around the Des Moines area, had apples at most the local farmers markets and sold apples picked or u-pick right at the farm Dick and Audrey still continued to help and direct Rick, Sue and kids, until they pasted.
To this day they are greatly missed..
Then in 1999, due to agricultural over-spray from neighboring farm field, (when the trees were in blossom) over half the tree died and got push out.
It's taken a long time to get pasted that.

Currently, we sell apples, pumpkins, fall decorations, and yummy treats from our little country store.
