Er ist der größte Seehafen in Deutschland und nach dem Hafen Rotterdam sowie Hafen von Antwerpen der drittgrößte in Europa (Stand 2016).
Gemessen an Standardcontainer-Umschlagzahlen von 2012 war er mit seinen vier Containerterminals nach Rotterdam der zweitgrößte Containerhafen Europas und der vierzehntgrößte der Erde.
2015 war er der drittgrößte Containerhafen Europas nach Rotterdam und Antwerpen.Schifffahrtsrouten verbinden ihn mit mehr als 900 Häfen in über 170 Ländern.
