Hacettepe Tıp Fakültesinin başlangıcı sayılan Çocuk Sağlığı Kürsüsü, 2 Şubat 1954 tarihinde Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesine bağlı olarak Prof.

Hacettepe Üniversitesi, Çocuk Sağlığı Enstitüsü ve Hastanesi olarak 1957 yılında Hacettepe'de çalışmaya başlamış ve 1958 yılında da eğitim, öğretim, araştırma çalışmalarına ve kamu hizmetine geçmiştir.
1961 yılında Hacettepe'de Hemşirelik, Tıbbi Teknoloji, Fizik Tedavi ve Rehabilitasyon, 1962 yılında Beslenme ve Diyetetik alanlarında eğitim yapan Sağlık Bilimleri Yüksekokulu kurulmuştur.
1963 yılında ise Hacettepe Sağlık Bilimleri Yüksekokulu, Tıp ve Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesi hâline getirilerek Temel Bilimler, Hemşirelik, Fizyoterapi- Rehabilitasyon, Tıbbi Teknoloji ve Sağlık Teknolojisi Yüksekokulları bu fakülteye bağlı olarak yeniden örgütlenmiş ve ayrıca yine Tıp ve Sağlık Bilimleri Fakültesine bağlı Diş Hekimliği Yüksekokulu kurulmuştur.
1965 yılında Hacettepe Üniversitesi eğitim kurumlarının koordinasyonunu sağlamak amacıyla Hacettepe Bilim Merkezi ve 1966'da Hacettepe Tıp Merkezi kurulmuş, aynı yıl Hacettepe Tıp Merkezi Hastanesi de hizmete girmiştir.
Bu şekilde örgütlenen ve gelişen çekirdek kuruluşlar, 8 Temmuz 1967 tarih ve 892 sayılı Kanun'la Hacettepe Üniversitesi hâline getirilmiş ve Tıp, Sağlık Bilimleri, Fen ve Sosyal Bilimler Fakülteleri ile eğitime başlamıştır.
1968 yılında Ev Ekonomisi Yüksekokulu kurulmuş ve 1969 yılında yüksekokul olarak kurulan Eczacılık ve Diş Hekimliği 1971 yılında fakülte hâline getirilmiştir.
Daha sonraki yıllarda kurulan yeni bölümler ve fakültelerle büyüyen Hacettepe Üniversitesi, ikinci yerleşkesini merkez yerleşkesine 20 km uzaklıkta Beytepe mevkiinde 1500 hektarlık alanda kurmuştur..
