Dezember 1819 aus Teilen der Landabtretung der Choctaw-Indianer vom 24. Oktober 1816 gebildet. Benannt wurde es nach General Nathaniel Greene, einem Helden der amerikanischen Revolution. Die erste Bezirkshauptstadt wurde Erie, das jetzt im Hale County liegt. 1838 wurde dies Eutaw. 1868 brannte das Gerichtsgebäude und wurde völlig zerstört.VerkehrEtwa 10 km nordwestlich der Bezirkshauptstadt Eutaw führen quer durch das County von Nordosten nach Südwesten die hier zusammen verlaufenden Interstate 20 und Interstate 59. Durch Eutaw selbst führen die U.S. Highways 43 und 11. Weiterhin durchziehen die Alabama State Routes 14 und 39 das County.
