Grandmother's Garden is situated within Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark and adjacent to Birmingham Historical Society's 1905 Duncan House in Sloss Quarters, where industrial workers once lived and raised their food and medicine. The garden recreates a home garden of the early 20th century, before commercial fertilizers, hybrid seeds, and highly mechanized practices. Plots separated by gravel walks are laid out for vegetables, medicinal herbs, fruits, and flowers.. . About Sloss Quarters: . The Sloss Company rented houses to its managers, workers and their families during the early 20th century. Wash yards and garden plots extended to 32nd Street where the commissary and doctor's office are still located today. When the company began to use this site to manufacture concrete and sell a fuel known as "Coke", company housing moved to the surrounding neighborhood.. . Today Grandmother's garden is a recreation of early Sloss Quarters and open to the public.
