All good stories start off with “Once upon a time….” a man by the name of Izzy Goldberg fled from Poland to America in 1920 with a dream and the clothes on his back.
Handed down to him from generations before him, was the knowledge and recipes of making bagels.
Izzy was strong-minded and had the ambition to open his own Bagel Bakery and landed in the Bronx in 1928.
With the help of his bride, Helen, their business flourished, as did their household with the birth of their four sons, Arthur, Alfred, Jerry and Marty..

Their four boys learning from their father, continued the family business by opening their own Bagel Bakeries; two of the boys, Arthur and Alfred in Northern New Jersey and Jerry and Marty in Central New Jersey.
Another generation was born into the Bagel business..

Now for the other branch of the family tree, my mother’s father, Daniel Kirschner owned and operated one of the last union Bagel Bakers shop in Jackson Heights New York.
It is during these days before automation, that bagels were made with a mixer of high-gluten flour, malt, salt, water and yeast and hand rolled using 2” strips of dough to form a bagel.
His bagels were so popular, that when Ronald Reagan would come into New York, he only wanted a Bagel World bagel..

The 2nd son of Izzy is my father Alfred.
As a child, I worked in my father’s bakery learning from him what he learned from his father.
By age 19, I opened my first Bagel Store and was able to sell it for a profit within a year.
Fast forward thirty years, and several adventures later….I have settled down in Ringwood, New Jersey, with my lovely wife and partner, Susan.
We now have 2 locations, one in Ringwood and one in Pompton Lakes..

The traditions of my grandfathers are still being carried on today, with a few exceptions.
