Detailed description is RGS - Northwest oversee's all flight operations in support of the Air Cadet Gliding Program and the Power Pilot Scholarship. They provide services to Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwestern Ontario. On July 5, 1965 forty cadets from the cadet camp at Canadian Forces Base Namao were taken to Cooking Lake Airport, 14 miles east of Edmonton, and given familiarization flights in either a Schweizer TG1 or TG2 dual trainer. The cadets were charged $3 per flight and the average cost for a day's operation was $120. This covered the rental of the tow plane, a Champion 140 aircraft, and the rental of the Schweizer TG1. The Schweizer TG2 was owned by the Edmonton Soraing Club and made available for use by the cadets. This was the first step in the creation of the Air Cadet Gliding Program. . . In 1966, the familiarization program moved to Canadian Forces Base Penhold. The familiarization program continued and a two week scholarship course was introduced. This course did not bring the scholarship candidates to licence standard but did allow the twelve cadets on scholarship to receive more detailed instruction than the familiarization program provided. During the summer of 1966, 1700 familiarization flights were flown and 720 scholarship flights were flown. . . The first scholarship course that would enable course candidates to achieve a Ministry of Transport gliding licence was held in 1967, at Canadian Forces Base Penhold. Twelve candidates were chosen by the Air Cadet League Provincial Committees in Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Alberta. The flying training was conducted at the Innisfail Airport, 10 miles from the Penhold Base. Ground school classes were held in the available classrooms at the base. During 1967 three 2-22 gliders were purchased by the Air Cadet League of Canada from the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation in Elmira, New York. . . In 1973, the Air Cadet League of Canada expanded the program even further. The first Schweizer 2-33 was taken on line from the Schweizer Aircraft Corporation and the summer program in Western Canada was split between two sites. Glider training was carried out at Canadian Forces Station Yorkton and Canadian Forces Base Penhold. . . The Regional Gliding School (Prairie) (RGS (Pra)) was officially formed in 1974, with the scholarship course conducted at Rivers, Manitoba, and year-round headquarters located at CFB Winnipeg. The first summer program held in Rivers proved to be a tremendous success with 100 scholarships awarded and over 4800 flights flown. . . In 1975, females were admitted into the Air Cadet Program. Eight female cadets attended RGS (Pra), 75 gliding licence scholarships were awarded, and all graduates flew to passenger carrying status. Ten students received their winch launch endorsement as well. . . The summer training included passenger carrying qualification until 1977. After that summer, it became the responsibility of the individual gliding centres to provide the glider flights to enable graduates of RGS (Pra) to attain passenger carrying status. . . With the intention of providing the gliding course experience to double the number of cadets, a 3-week solo standard scholarship was initiated in 1982. A total of 118 students were flown to solo wings standard, with 37 students remaining for a second 3-week period to attain licence standard. The solo standard graduates were to complete their licence training at their gliding centre. The 3-week Air Studies Course was also created in 1982, to cover the shortage of pre-flight training at home squadrons. . . RGS (Pra) and Air Studies moved to Gimli, Manitoba, in 1984. This was also the last year of the "Solo Wings" program. RGS (Pra) returned to the six-week Transport Canada Glider Licence course for the summer of 1985. . . Due to poor housing conditions at Gimli, in 1988 RGS (Pra) moved back to CFB Penhold. A year-round maintenance facility is established at the Red Deer Industrial Airport. Penhold Air Cadet Camp General Training Wing took over administration of the Air Studies Course. . . In 1989, the Glider Structural Inspection and Repair Program (GSIRP) was initiated. Glider #3 (C-FFDR) and Glider #7 (C-FJNM) were completely disassembled, inspected for cracks and defects, and reassembled and painted. These were the first gliders to receive the familiar yellow and blue stripe paint scheme. . . Air Studies moved back under the wing of RGS (Pra) in 1994. Penhold Air Cadet Camp course cadets were given familiarization flights in Cessna 172 aircraft by RGS (Pra) Pilots. . . In 1995, the Millionth Air Cadet Glider Flight was flown in a special ceremony by Captain Dean Gillrie and WO Sarah Tufts. The 2-22 glider is retired from the Air Cadet Gliding Program, leaving the 2-33A as the sole air cadet glider. . . An instructor exchange was made in 1997 between Prairie and Atlantic Regions. Two instructors from Prairie Region went to RGS(A), and 3 instructor candidates from Atlantic region completed the Glider Instructor Course and instructed at Penhold. . . RGS (Pra) and the Maintenance Facility returned to Gimli in 1998. The gliding course flights were named Apache and Bandit to honour the 2CFFTS Basic Flight Training Course at CFB Moose Jaw. The Air Studies Course remained in Penhold. . . RGS (Pra) returned to Penhold for one more year, due to the Summer Games yachting events taking place in Gimli, in 1999. . . In 2000, RGS (Pra) was named Prairie Region Gliding School (PRGS), and returned to Gimli. The Air Studies Course was revamped into the Introduction to Aviation Course (ITAC). The ITAC flights were named Cobra and Dragon, continuing the honour to the 2CFFTS Basic Flight Training Course. Major Dean Gillrie became the first Cadet Instructor Cadre officer that was trainied by the Air Cadet system, to become a Regional Cadet Air Operations Officer (RCA Ops O). . . PRGS returned to the name RGS (Pra) in 2001..
