The artist has to pay back all the money spent on film clips, publicity, touring, ticket sales, recordings, and so on and so on.
With enough money anyone can appear famous.

I was very lucky, I had a very honest manager (Ben Preece), and I cottoned onto the fact very early on that when my famous successful friends were touring through Brisbane, I was shouting them lunch and buying their drinks.
Because they had such a massive machine around them, for every ticket they sold and every CD purchased, after all the debts were repaid, they would get maybe $1 per sale.
So if they sold 5000 records, they received 5 grand, a year.
