Detailed description is PPS GEAR UP currently serves classes of '17 & '18 at MHS, FHS and RHS; and classes of '20 & '21 in MHS, RHS & JHS clusters in Portland, Oregon The PPS GEAR UP College Ahead Program (CAP) and Mobilizing for College (M4C) are 7-year federal grants supporting college & career readiness in our cohort clusters. . . The CAP grant began in the 2011-12 school year when the cohort was 6th/7th graders from 14 feeder schools to FHS, RHS and MHS. We are in the 4th year of the grant and our cohort students are currently in the 9th and 10th grades at Franklin, Madison and Roosevelt. The grant will follow those ~1,700 students through their senior year in high school (cohort #1 will be through their first year of college!).. . The M4C grant was awarded fall of 2014 and we started working in schools in spring of school year. We serve the ~1500 students, that make up the classes of 2020 and 2021 at our 15 MHS/FHS/JHS feeder schools. We will follow that cohort into the high schools and through their senior year.. . There is a GEAR UP Coordinator assigned to each high school, and to each K-8 cluster. General activities supported by the GEAR UP grant include: near-peer mentoring, college visits, career exploration opportunities, speakers, promoting college-going culture in the schools, sponsoring family nights, and teacher professional development.. . . . Our 4 goals are:. 1. Increase cohort students’ academic performance and preparation for post-secondary education. . 2. Increase the rate of high school graduation and college enrollment for cohort. . 3. Increase cohort students’ and families’ knowledge of post-secondary education options, preparation and financial aid. . 4. Increase the percentage of disabled students within cohort who earn college credit prior to high school graduation, and who graduate from high school
