Fue designado como un memorial nacional por la Orden Ejecutiva 7523, de 21 de diciembre de 1935, y es mantenido por el Servicio de Parques Nacionales .El sitio conmemorativo es un parque de 37 ha, a la vera del río Misisipi, localizado en el sitio en que se encontraba asentada la ciudad original de San Luis, cerca del punto en el que comenzó la legendaria expedición de Lewis y Clark.
