Detailed description is Follow this group of Geelong Polio Survivors and 'carers' on their journey to India to help keep India polio-free, support polio survivors & end polio 4eva Gary's Polio Project is a group of caring, like-minded, polio survivors from the Geelong Polio Support Group.
Gary, Jennifer & Jan (who all contracted poliovirus as kids) along with their carers are heading to India in January 2018.
Their aim is to support Rotary Int.
& the WHO's Global Polio Eradication Initiative, raise awareness of this debilitating disease, help immunise Indian children so as to keep India polio-free, help end polio and support polio survivors.

But we need your financial support to continue the eradication fight..

Why India? Because it borders Pakistan which still has wild polio and there are 26 MILLION newborns in India EVERY YEAR who need to be protected.

Also as long as a single child remains infected, children in all countries are at risk of contracting polio.

Why not just make a donation as some have suggested? Because to Gary, Jennifer & Jan, that's way too easy.
Whilst they're still well enough (even though they're now in their 60's and 70's and the clock is ticking FAST), they want to lend a practical hand.
They want to see and feel what polio survivors feel in India every single day.
They want to be reminded not just how lucky they are to live in Australia, but how lucky they are NOT to have contracted polio over there..

And they want to help do for children in India what their parents would have given their right arm to do for them when they were kids.
i.e.
provide protection from polio with a simple vaccine..

For Jennifer, Jan and Gary this trip is also a journey to honour their parents and in fact all parents of polio survivors who did so much for their kids.
Many parents virtually gave up their lives or at least put them on hold to support their polio affected children..

In the first half of the last Century, polio was the most feared disease in the developed world..
Today, it's a disease most Australians have forgotten.
Truth is the Community, Health Professionals, the entire developed world has largely forgotten about Polio AND it's survivors.
The fear and panic that it created back then, the deaths and paralysis, and sadly the many survivors of polio estimated to be about 400 000 today just in Australia alone.

Effective polio vaccines introduced in 1956 and '61 saw a massive drop in infections..
In 2017, the world is almost polio free...almost! 3 countries are yet to stop it.
So the big push is on to get rid of it now forever.
