Detailed description is Garnand Marketing, LLC was founded in November of 1971 and was the culmination of a lifelong dream for Vay and Gary Garnand who had always dreamed of owning their own business..
It all started when Robert E.
Lee Garnand got involved in the early Idaho potato and bean industries.
His son, Vay, who had grown up in agriculture returned home after serving in World War II and the two decided to start a potato and onion business in Blackfoot, Idaho.

Sadly, not long after Vay moved his family to Blackfoot, Robert died and the dream of the business died with him.
Vay became a buyer for a potato warehouse and continued working in the potato and onion business for over a decade.

When his son, Gary needed to raise money for college, he also began working in the potato industry; loading rail cars, driving truck, working the line, and learning how potato packing operations run.
It was here he first began trying new ways to increase sales, including adding a foil wrap line and creating specialty packed cartons.
In the summer of 1964, Gary went to work for the Charles E.
Gilb Company.
Charles became a mentor to Gary and taught him the intricacies of the the produce industry.

Gary’s first love, was the potato industry and he was exposed to the gamut from field man to shift supervision.
When he graduated from the University of Idaho with a business degree, he went right back to potatoes and was further exposed to the transportation and marketing areas of the business.

Then in November of 1971, Gary and Vay started Garnand Produce in Firth, Idaho.
A family and business friend , Cy Holden, contacted Gary to see if he were interested in working in the California potato deal after the Idaho crop was finished.
Gary jumped at the chance and went to work with Jim Moquist at Gold Ribbon Potato company in Arvin, California.
While Gary was working on the sales program for Gold Ribbon, Bob Lewis another family friend, approached Vay and Gary about selling for a Washington potato shipper that was just getting started.
Harvest Fresh Produce was opened in the summer of 1972 in Othello, Washington..
The next opportunity came to sell for ARZ Potato in Hermiston, Oregon.
Vay handled the sales for ARZ and Gary handled Harvest Fresh.
Quincy Produce and the Potato Factory plus other onion and potato packing plants followed.
By 1978, Vay and Gary were selling potatoes and onions for five packers in Washington and Oregon.
Maxine Garnand joined the company full time in the summer of 1972 as bookkeeper and office specialist.
She would remain active in the company until her retirement in 2004..
In 1984, Vay and Gary decided to consolidate their sales program and move to Twin Falls, Idaho.
It was a big decision and meant giving up the lucrative sales deals in Washington and Oregon to change the direction of the company.
It was at that time they decided to focus on the raidly developing food service industry.
In the coming years they developed long-term relationships with high profile restaurants, food service distributors, and buying groups.

Gary also became was intimately involved through the Produce Marketing Association with the formation of the Produce Academy program.
The program was designed to help educate produce distributors in new and innovative ways to increase sales within their organization.

Garnand Marketing continued to grow and in 1981 when he realized the need for better control of transportation was needed, he Garnand formed The Northwest Connection (TNC).
Kevin Adams was hired in December of 1982 to lead the truck leasing and brokerage operation and has remained its leader to this day.
In 2004, he also became a partner in Garnand Marketing, LLC..
Today Garnand Marketing and The Northwest Connection continue to reinvent themselves.
TNC has continued its lease operation but has branched out in a more diverse customer base.
