Detailed description is La Gallia est le nom d'un bâtiment historique construit en 1885 situé sur les rives de l'Ill, à Strasbourg.Il abrite le plus ancien restaurant universitaire laïque de France ainsi que le CROUS de Strasbourg et le siège de l’association fédérative générale des étudiants de Strasbourg. C'est également le nom de l'arrêt de tramway situé à proximité.HistoriqueConstructionLa bâtiment fait partie de ceux construits par l'Allemagne dans un style germanique spécifique après son occupation de l'Alsace à la suite de la guerre franco-allemande de 1870. Il a été construit en 1885 pour une compagnie d'assurances du même nom située à Hambourg. Son style évoque la Renaissance en Allemagne du Nord. Germania est le nom latin pour « Germanie », le nom antique de la région actuelle qu'occupe l'Allemagne.Retour à la FranceEn 1918, lors du retour de l'Alsace-Lorraine dans la France, l'immeuble a été renommé Gallia, qui est le nom latin pour « Gaule ». En 1927, avec l’appui du Gouvernement Poincaré, la jeune association fédérative générale des étudiants de Strasbourg (créée en 1923), rachète le fonds de la Taverne de l'Université, un ancien restaurant traditionnel, est en fait le premier restaurant universitaire laïque de France. Le restaurant universitaire a continué d'être géré par l'AFGES jusqu'à la rentrée 2015/2016, date depuis laquelle il est géré par le CROUS, qui l'a récupéré à la suite de la mauvaise gestion du budget de la part de l'association étudiante.
