Friends Of Avon Meetinghouse

6 West Main Street

Hartford,

Connecticut,United-states - 06001

Detailed description is Friends of Avon Meetinghouse is dedicated to the preservation of this historic and iconic structure in Avon, CT.
History.
The Meetinghouse opened its doors on September 7, 1819, after one year of construction and at a cost of $2,150 on a land parcel donated by the Joel Wheeler family.
A Building Committee, consisting of Amos Wheeler, Thomas Bishop and Francis Woodford called on architect David Hoadley, known throughout Connecticut for his pleasing church designs.
The structure is considered one of Hoadley’s finest works, showing evidence of the influence of the work of Charles Bullfinch..
First named the United Religious Association of Farmington , it was renamed in March, 1819, as the Northington Parish (the Third Church of Farmington).
The Meetinghouse served both the church congregation and the community from its inception.
The center of social activities and Town Meetings, the Meetinghouse alternated with the West Avon Meetinghouse as the Town Hall until 1891.
When the floodwaters of 1955 covered the bridge over the Farmington River and isolated hundreds from their homes, the Meetinghouse was used as refuge for the stranded and headquarters for relief groups..
The Town of Avon was incorporated in 1830,an in 1841 the congregation was again renamed, this time as “ The Congregational Church in Avon”..
When the Meetinghouse opened in 1819, James Monroe was president of the United States.
A nine year old Abraham Lincoln had just lost his mother.
A growing Abolitionist movement in Connecticut was inspired by the fiery sermons of Rev.
Lyman Beecher, father of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
It was twenty years before the crew of the Amistad would rebel and find refuge in Farmington and New Haven.
The French Revolution was still eleven years in the future.
Much has passed the iconic windows and steeple of the Avon Meetinghouse..
Situated at the crossroads of two major thoroughfares and marking the Town center, the Avon Meetinghouse has been a reliable symbol of the Town of Avon.
One is hard pressed to find an early photograph of the town center that does not feature the Meetinghouse prominently.
The Meetinghouse saw the opening of the Farmington Canal in Avon soon after 1838 and the coming of the railroad that signaled the Canal’s demise twenty years later.
The view from the Meetinghouse windows changed from the barns and fields of a small farming town to the bustle of a scenic Hartford suburb..
Throughout the past 200 years, the Avon Congregational Church has sustained the gift of their forebears.
The Meetinghouse has been maintained with remarkable continuity.
Small changes to the interior have been made to accommodate electricity and heating, as well as placement of an organ.
Fire damaged the structure in 1876, with repairs that same year.
The biggest change has been the enclosure of Hoadley’s arched window that once graced the north wall but was removed in the 1850s for construction of a fellowship hall.
In 1959, the congregation installed copies of the original 1819 windows.
Two original windows remain at the front of the Meetinghouse.
The steeple was severely damaged in the hurricane of 1938.
A new steeple – an exact copy of the original, and with original weathervane, was dedicated in 1949.
A visitor today will see much the same structure that the Building Committee so boldly commissioned in 1819..
