Detailed description is The Freedom Riders Park committee is dedicated to the story of the freedom riders and the development of Freedom Riders National Monument in NE Alabama. Calhoun County and its nearby city of Anniston will soon be home to a nationally significant trail of learning stations. Among them will be the four acre Freedom Riders Park (FRP). Located on Alabama Highway 202, the Park is where the actual 1961 burning bus incident took place. . . Already, over $150,000 has been committed to the project and while these funds represent nothing more than a beginning, it ensures that soon, the public will have a high quality destination for school groups, heritage tourism and all those interested in the history if civil rights.. . The Park will include ample parking, sidewalks, sculpture, picnic pavilions, outdoor lighting, a restroom, and Smithsonian-style signage in two distinct learning nodes. . . The FRP concept has been accomplished over more than ten years of planning with assistance and leadership from Alabama State Representative Barbara Boyd, Jacksonville State University, Omega Psi Phi's Thetta Tau Chapter, the Alabama Department of Transportation and the Calhoun County Commission - particularly Commissioner Eli Henderson.
