Detailed description is Fort Lancaster is located in the heart of West Texas, 120 miles south of Midland, 120 miles southwest of San Angelo, and 275 miles west of San Antonio.
The post once protected the San Antonio-El Paso Trade Route.
Fort Lancaster State Historic Site commemorates the site of a U.S.
Army post established in the 1850's to protect the military/trade route between San Antonio and El Paso.
During the Civil War, Confederate Texans were stationed at the fort from 1861-1862.
After the Civil War, the Buffalo Soldiers and other U.S.
Army soldiers were periodically stationed at the fort beginning in 1867.
Company K of the 9th Cavalry Regiment fought a battle against the Kickapoo and their allies, at the fort, on December 26, 1867.
This is the only known attack by Native Americans on a U.S.
Army Fort in Texas.
The U.S.
Army closed the fort in the late 1870s.
