Detailed description is National Historic Site & Provincial Heritage Place The Farmers' Bank of Rustico was the first people's bank in Canada and is believed to have been the precursor to the Credit Union Movement. The idea of the Farmers Bank came from Reverend Georges-Antoine Belcourt and operated from 1864 to 1894. Today the bank is now a museum which describes the settlement of the community by the Acadians in Rustico, and the establishment of the bank. There is also genealogy of Rustico Acadian families and guided tours of the Doucet House next door, a traditional Acadian log house.. .
