Em 1971 o padre Osvaldo Gonçalves iniciou o trabalho de evangelização de jovens, na rua Henrique Gorceix nº 80, bairro Padre Eustáquio, através de reuniões e encontros de fim de semana, para refletir sobre os valores cristãos e a necessidade de tornar a sua vida útil, em favor da comunidade..
Em 1974, o trabalho se ampliou para os casais e foram iniciados os Encontros de Revisão Matrimonial, para ajudar as famílias na sua estruturação - através do diálogo, da harmonia conjugal e familiar - e na educação dos filhos..
O trabalho cresceu muito.
Foi construída uma ampla casa para sede do Movimento e para a realização dos Encontros de fim de semana..
Em 17 de maio de 1982 a entidade, já em funcionamento, tomou forma jurídica com a criação da ASSOCIAÇÃO FAMÍLIA DE CANÁ, cujo objetivo estatutário pode ser resumido na frase ''FAZER FAMÍLIAS FELIZES''.
