It's time to end complacency - AGAIN! ~Merideth Geers, CNM~ It was 1979 when I decided I wanted to help women safely achieve the births of their choosing. With the ever increasing medicalization of birth in the 70s and 80s there was an undercurrent of a need for change. Many women were interested in having less intervention and some were even interested in home birth. There was only one problem,.... there were not enough midwives to help them achieve the safe, empowering, gentle births they desired.. . I felt a passion and a calling to aspire to become a midwife, to make a difference, to fill the void. I believe women have the right to choose their own path into motherhood with the caregiver as well as venue of their choosing.. For many years, I felt I was making a difference one woman, one baby, one birth at a time as I worked within the medical system as an RN in Labor and Delivery units, and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in NY. Finally, in 2006, I decided it was time to complete my journey toward midwifery. With the blessing of my family, I started taking the necessary steps toward applying for and enrolling in graduate school for a Masters Degree in Midwifery and Women's Health. I was accepted in Stony Brook University's Program in 2007 and completed that program in the Spring of 2009. I was honored to receive the Overall Excellence Award at the time of my graduation. In addition, I was the recipient of a scholarship for "Keeping Birth Normal" by the Binghamton, NY NYSALM/ACNM chapter. With the signing of the Midwifery Modernization Act into Law in 2010 I am able to have a private Midwifery Practice in Central New York. I offer:. Preconception Counseling.
